Product Selection
How do I choose the right display module for my project?
Start by identifying the demands of your product environment: required screen size, touch capability, operating conditions and UI complexity. 4D’s consistent form-factor families allow you to select a module that fits your constraints today and upgrade performance later without redesigning your enclosure or PCB. What is the difference between a smart display and a host-driven display?
Smart displays include an onboard processor that handles graphics, widgets, UI logic and drawing commands internally. This reduces load on your host MCU, simplifies code and often shortens development time dramatically. Host-driven modules require the host MCU to manage everything, which may be appropriate for minimal UIs but introduces more integration work.
Can I upgrade processors without changing my enclosure or PCB?
Yes. 4D’s architecture is deliberately designed around footprint consistency. Most display families maintain identical mechanical and electrical footprints across multiple processor types, enabling generation-to-generation performance improvements without mechanical redesign.
Do you offer non-touch and touch options?
Yes. Many display families provide variants for non-touch, resistive-touch and capacitive-touch configurations. Capacitive-touch variants are recommended for modern, responsive UI experiences.
Architecture & Integration
Do 4D modules handle graphics internally?
All intelligent 4D modules include an onboard processor that manages drawing operations, widget rendering, touch events and screen updates. This eliminates the need to write or maintain low-level graphics libraries on your host MCU. It also ensures predictable performance regardless of the host system.
What communication protocols are supported?
Most modules support UART as the primary protocol. Many also support I²C, SPI and GPIO for expanded integration options. Module-specific datasheets outline electrical characteristics, timing, and supported commands for each protocol.
Can 4D modules work with legacy systems?
Yes in many cases. Legacy systems using UART, I²C or SPI can integrate directly. If your system uses a protocol outside these (Ethernet, CAN, Profibus), you may need an intermediate microcontroller to translate commands. Engineers regularly integrate 4D modules into older industrial and medical systems.
Can I offload UI rendering to reduce MCU load?

Can Workshop output integrate with firmware?

Does Workshop support all 4D display families?

Customisation
Can I customise the physical layout or connectors?
Physical customisations typically require board redesign, new tooling and updated manufacturing processes. If your project requires connector changes, bezel modifications or unique mechanical features, contact our engineering team early in development to assess feasibility.
What aspects of the UI can I customise?
All visual and behavioural UI components inside Workshop can be customised, including layout, colour schemes, widget behaviour, fonts, animations and touch logic. This allows teams to match existing product UI languages and brand styles.
Do you offer custom display manufacturing?
Yes. For qualified commercial requirements, 4D provides custom display services including modified hardware, special environmental tolerances, unique form factors or specialised connectors. All custom projects are evaluated for technical feasibility and manufacturing viability.
Which microcontrollers are compatible?
Any MCU that supports UART, I²C or SPI can communicate with a 4D module. Common platforms include STM32, PIC, ESP32, Arduino, Raspberry Pi and Renesas devices. Integration guides and example code are available for many of these.
Do you support integration with major MCU platforms?
