Hardware Overview
At the centre of the project is the ESP32-P4-40RCT-CLB, a 4-inch round capacitive touch display featuring a 720 × 720 pixel resolution.
The display's circular format makes it particularly well-suited to applications such as gauges, dashboards and control interfaces.
For internet connectivity, the project uses an ESP32-C6 Wi-Fi add-on module and external antenna, allowing the display to connect to online radio streams.
Audio is handled through the display's onboard ES8311 audio codec and amplifier, eliminating the need for an external amplifier board. A small 8-ohm speaker connects directly to the display's speaker outputs, keeping the hardware setup simple and compact.
Interactive Touchscreen Interface
The radio interface was designed using Workshop4, providing an intuitive way to control playback directly from the touchscreen.
The interface includes five selectable radio stations, each with its own dedicated button. Users can select their preferred station before starting playback using the Play control.
Additional features include:
- Play and Stop Controls: Start or stop the selected internet radio stream.
- Volume Adjustment: Control speaker output using an interactive slider.
- Brightness Control: Adjust the display backlight directly from the interface.
- Live VU Meter: Visualise incoming audio levels with a dynamically adjusting gauge.
- Wi-Fi Reconnect: Manually restart the wireless connection without rebooting the project.
Reliable Internet Radio Streaming
Beyond the touchscreen interface, the project incorporates several features to maintain reliable operation.
Automatic Wi-Fi reconnection helps restore connectivity if the network drops out, while stream monitoring detects interrupted or unresponsive radio streams and attempts to restart playback.
The system also uses progressively increasing delays between reconnection attempts, preventing unnecessary repeated requests when a station is unavailable.
These features allow the internet radio to operate more reliably without requiring constant user intervention.
Get Started with the Project
This project brings together the ESP32-P4's touchscreen capabilities, ESP32-C6 wireless connectivity and onboard audio hardware to create a compact, fully functional internet radio.
Whether you're exploring audio applications or developing your own connected display interface, it's a great starting point for experimenting with the ESP32-P4 platform.
The complete project files and source code are available through the 4D Systems Resource Centre , making it easy to download, modify and build upon the example.
