5.0 ” gen4 Intelligent Display Module with ESP32 SoC
The gen4 ESP32 5.0” Integrated Display Module is part of the latest gen4 – ESP32 series of modules Designed and Manufactured by 4D Systems.
The available 5.0 display modules are 800×480 resolution IPS TFT LCD Displays offering an RGB Interface between the ESP32-S3R8 Processor. Available in Non-Touch, Resistive, Capacitive, and Capacitive Touch with Cover Lens Bezel (CLB).
The ESP32-S3R8 Processor makes available multiple GPIO which include UART, SPI, I2C, PWM, and Analog functionality, while also serving interfaces for the LCD Touch screen, Real Time Clock, Quad SPI Flash, microSD Card, 8bit IO Expander and Native USB-C.
The user interface to the gen4-ESP32 series is a 30-pin FPC/ZIF socket, designed for a 30-way 0.5mm pitch FFC cable, for easy and simple connection to an application or motherboard, or for connecting to accessory boards for a range of functionality advancements.
This series of boards are compatible with the 4D Systems Workshop4 IDE, utilising the Espressif compiler and 4D Systems purpose-built libraries, allowing a feature-rich design and programming experience.
Any code designed and written to run on other 4D Systems display modules, such as modules featuring Goldelox, Picaso, Pixxi, or Diablo16 Graphics Processors, are unfortunately not compatible with the gen4-ESP32 range due to being a totally different processor family. However, please contact 4D Systems Support Team for assistance if you are planning on migrating from a different 4D Systems display model, as there are some similarities between them – such as the graphics, however, a majority of the coding will have to be adapted.
From a mechanical perspective, these gen4-ESP32 modules are physically the same mounting size as other gen4 products by 4D Systems. The only difference is the circuitry used. The overall thickness of these gen4-ESP32 modules is greater than other gen4 products, due to the USB-C connector and coin cell battery holder for the RTC. Typically wherever a different gen4 module had been mounted, a gen4-ESP32 module could fit in the same location.

- 2 native GPIO dedicated to Native USB-C functionality (GPIO19/20) unless that is hardware disabled, it is then available as GPIO.
- 1 native GPIO available after boot (GPIO0), strapping pin.
- 2 native GPIO available if the UART is not required (GPIO43/44)
- Up to 8 GPIO via IO Expander capable of Digital Input/Output (EXT-GPIO0 – EXT-GPIO7).

WORKSHOP4 IDE
Workshop4 is a comprehensive software IDE for Microsoft Windows that provides an integrated software development platform for all of the 4D family of processors and modules. The IDE combines the Editor, Compiler, Linker and Downloader to develop complete 4DGL application code.

GENIE MAGIC
Genie Magic is an extension to ViSi-Genie, which is available in Workshop4 PRO. Genie Magic allows the User to add 4DGL code to various points in the ViSi-Genie backend code, which allows Users to take full advantage of the power of 4DGL, while retaining the speed and convenience of ViSi-Genie and its defined communication protocol.
Genie Magic allows you to enter 4DGL code in the form of Events, Code and Objects, along with various touch related additions too, giving you to the power to achieve advanced GUI’s in ViSi-Genie without having to write the full code yourself.
Genie Magic is fully supported by the genieArduino and geniePi libraries, making communication with an Arduino or Raspberry Pi host even more powerful.
When using Genie Magic in combination with the Smart Widget Editor, it is possible to use the Smart Widgets Editor tool and Smart Widgets to create other graphical user interface elements such as:

Workshop4 is a Windows-only product. It is compatible with Windows 8 through to Windows 11.
Note some older OS such as ME, Vista, XP and 7 have not been tested for some time and are not supported by Microsoft anymore; however, they may still work.
Legacy support updates for the older OS may not be possible, depending on what issues are found. For best results, run a current Windows OS.
It is possible to run Workshop4 under a VM on Linux or Mac. However, it is up to the User to set this up.
