Why 4D

2023-09-29T23:31:24+10:00Categories: Company News|Tags: |

To truly understand what makes 4D Systems different as a provider of intelligent display solutions, we spoke to clients, engineers, distributors and technical support staff to find out why customers prefer us over our competitors.

Here are 10 of the most common reasons why people choose 4D Systems.

1. Quality Australian systems and ISO certification

“Peace of mind is a wonderful thing.”

Our customers never doubt our quality, and it goes without saying that quality matters every step of the way. We are committed to building state-of-the-art intelligent display solutions, and our factory in Sydney is central to bringing our solutions to life. We also have manufacturing facilities in China and the Philippines.

4D Systems is certified under ISO 9001: 2015 and our production team is made up of seasoned electronics and software engineers who work in close partnership with only ISO 9001-certified factories under our stringent Quality Assurance Procedures. All 4D Systems products are 100% lead-free and RoHS-compliant in accordance with Australian and International Restriction of Hazardous Substances regulations.

2. Tailor-made solutions

“We had a problem and you designed an actual solution for us.”

Every client has their own unique challenges. 4D Systems provides the solutions. Our customers trust us because we take the time to understand them and help design a tailored solution that speaks to their specific project and their bottom line.

Enterprise manufacturers, engineers, design houses and hobbyists all appreciate that we offer a complete package to suit a range of needs. One engineer might need a scalable solution that doesn’t require investing in new software while also keeping development time to a cost-effective minimum. For another, an off-the-shelf 4D display could bring new life to obsolete hardware and provide dynamic connectivity options for a broad range of projects and integrations.

We have a passion for scientifically exploring new ways to meet your needs.

3. We are family

“There is such a close vibe and the team is always happy.”

4D Systems is a family-run company that comes from humble beginnings. Founded in a garage by our CEO Atilla Aknar, today Sinan Aknar leads our committed team. This company started as an idea and has grown to become a market leader for engineering real-world solutions.

Having navigated our way through uncertain times, GFCs, and the recent COVID-19 pandemic, it is a testament to the resilience of our team, our community and our never-give-up attitude that we find ourselves firmly positioned as a global leader in embedded intelligent display solutions. But at our core we remain one big family and value our staff as individuals who deliver innovative solutions to the world – not as resources, but as humans.

4. Future-proofing industries

6. Winning software

“Workshop4 Integrated Development Environment (IDE) – it’s amazing!”

Having a feature-packed graphic display is one thing, but putting it to good use is quite another. So we came up with Workshop4 IDE, a tool that lets users design smart graphical user interfaces (GUIs) quickly and easily.

It’s now the tool of choice for programming modules as it features multiple development environments, from text-based to visual programming. Together, they allow the user to have a GUI up and running in minutes rather than days – benefiting a range of users from the pro-maker to the most demanding engineer. The result? Projects are finished faster, look better and open up more possibilities.

7. Rapid prototyping

“You work efficiently and communicate rapidly, which is refreshing.”

Speed is king. We exist to jump-start development times with products designed specifically for ease of integration and swift application development. Customers are often surprised by our responsiveness, exceeding expectations to expediting development, while allowing for exceptionally fast prototyping and deployment. 4D SYSTEMS: A business with purpose

2023-09-29T23:31:39+10:00Categories: Company News|Tags: |

Defining our ethos and ongoing mission

Up until a few years ago, we never really had articulated a defined purpose for our business. We had core objectives, KPIs and strategic frameworks which drive our company forward, but really delving into why  we exist – that’s another question entirely.

As a business, we sometimes get caught up in the day-to-day routine. We have to support our customers, we have to liaise with our suppliers, and we have to take care of our internal people. But building a company that is important and lives out its values is about so much more than just the routine. Purpose has to be the beating heart of everything.

4D SYSTEMS can’t just be a business; we need to have a purpose that drives us. Without that purpose, what is the point of doing what we do? I believe that purpose is how successful companies define themselves. So we are putting purpose at the core of our strategy.

Until now, we had never really taken the time to sit down and think about clarifying that ‘purpose’. That’s why we made the decision to define the purpose of not only 4D SYSTEMS, but for the people who are its collective driving force.

The statements below reflect a little bit of all of us. Not just our staff, but all our stakeholders as well – everyone who is involved in our ecosystem as part of this journey, for which we live and breathe.

I like to believe that when Atilla, our CEO, started 4D in his garage a long time ago, that these statements in 2022 really do reflect the initial DNA of the company we established back in 2005/06. Only now, they have been clarified and are out there for all the world to see.

We had some great minds come together to articulate our PVMV statements (Purpose, Vision, Mission and Values). A special thanks to Alexandra, Afroz, Dev, James, Markku and Yema for helping us put these statements together for 4D SYSTEMS. I believe we have really defined ourselves with clarity, and what we stand for.

A sincere thank you for being a part of our journey along the way, whether it was in 2005 or 2022.

Here are our PVMV statements:

1. Purpose

“We help engineer solutions that unleash human creativity.”

4D SYSTEMS believes in the importance of intuitive technology that helps solve human needs and problems. We passionately believe that technology cannot just be a tool that is autonomous of people, but rather exists to make our choices more efficient, smarter and sustainable.

Amongst the most intuitive ways we interact with technology is through display and touch. We therefore design technology to shape the way humanity interacts with the world, and which makes complex computing stylish, simple and smart – right at our fingertips.

2. Vision

“To be the primary interface provider for human interaction and smart technology.”

Industry 3.0 witnessed the transformation of production from mechanical to computerised automation. Today, Industry 4.0 is taking automation to the next dimension with advances in computerised decision-making, increasingly interconnected devices, and artificial intelligence.

We are acutely aware of this transformative shift in technology and recognise that a connection to human endeavours needs to be preserved. The fourth dimension of the future is to continue to utilise technology that makes human intelligence smarter.

4D SYSTEMS is making human intelligence smarter today and into the future.

3. Mission

“We empower forward-thinking engineers, designers, and organisations with the ability to achieve their objectives using our intelligent display solutions.”

4D SYSTEMS provides commercially-ready embedded graphics display solutions for virtually any application. With IOS:9001-certified manufacturing facilities, we focus on delivering the highest level of quality and customer experience.

We recognise the growing importance of human-intuitive and intelligent technologies. We, therefore, offer technology that meets the needs of a diverse range of users, applications, and industries. Our mission to produce creative display solutions of the highest standards is backed by 4D SYSTEMS’ commitment to greater environmental responsibility and a proactive responsiveness to human needs.

4. Values

  • Courage in creativity: Every light-bulb moment comes from the audacity to dream of possibilities untold. Innovation is our passion, driven by a rigorous methodology in creating products and solutions for ourselves and others.
  • Driven by solutions: Tailored, customised, and cost-effective solutions can only be developed when we dig deep and truly understand the objectives of our customers to solve problems and meet needs. We thrive on this passion to explore new options to meet a variety of needs as technology progresses.
  • Human-first: For over 15 years, our team has forged its reputation as a global leader through relationships and understanding the people we work with. We treat our partners the way we would like to be treated, and we create products that are intuitively human. From all of us at 4D SYSTEMS, we believe this is the only way forward.
  • Shared performance outcomes: We believe in closely aligning our goals, and sharing our achievements. These shared outcomes are between our staff, our engineers, and our customers. We are always determined to meet challenges together: from time-to-market, creative goals, quality benchmarks, to commercial objectives.
  • Our principles do not bend: As an ISO:9001-certified entity, we have relentless focus on quality across everything we do. This is reflected not only in how we exceed our customers’ expectations, but also through living and breathing our commitment to environmental responsibility and humane capital practices.

Caretaker Medical

2024-06-07T02:08:36+10:00Categories: Medical|Tags: |

Idea

Caretaker Medical is an innovative digital health company focused on developing wireless patient-monitoring technologies that improve patient outcomes. One of those technologies, VitalStream, is a wearable wireless monitor that measures continuous ‘beat-by-beat’ blood pressure, hemodynamics and vital signs.

All of Caretaker Medical’s designs must follow rigorous standard operating procedures (SOPs), and in the healthcare field there is nothing more important than adhering to regulations.

“Since the VitalStream platform is a regulated medical device, we must adhere to IEC, FDA and ISO design practices,” says Justin McQuown, Director of Engineering at Caretaker Medical. “Within these requirements, we use a team-based approach that involves marketing, engineering and management feedback with multiple gate points throughout the project. This phased approach has led to success throughout the medical device certification process.”

The idea for VitalStream has been several years in the making, and it was designed as an improvement on previous iterations. The goal was to create a product that improved patient comfort, added additional communications capabilities, eased clinician workflow and – critically – enhanced the accuracy of measurements.

To that end, Caretaker Medical needed to source a touch display that would provide an intuitive user interface on the patient’s wrist, allowing easy configuration and operation that was not yet available in previous iterations of the VitalStream platform.

Solution

It wasn’t long before Caretaker Medical found the touch display that would take VitalStream to new heights: 4D SYSTEMS’ 4DLCD-24320240-CTP-IPS with a custom cover lens.

“We chose 4D SYSTEMS for the simplicity of implementation and cost of the semi-custom cover lens over a high-quality IPS display,” says Justin. “The design of the display only requires a single power supply, while using standard display and touch drivers allowed us to quickly get the device up and running.”

Jeff Pompeo, President and CEO at Caretaker Medical, says the 4D SYSTEMS team were helpful in providing options for the cover lens customisation. “We tried many different displays before settling on this one, but once we did 4D were quick to provide the customisable options available to us during the design process.”

Justin says the touch display is a critical component because it is VitalStream’s main interface between patient and clinician. “The 4D part is sourced as a finished assembly and will be the final step in production. It will then be used as the main interface for production testing and firmware loading.”

Outcome

VitalStream has received FDA 510(k) clearance, is in full production and is already being sold throughout the US. Caretaker Medical is excited about launching the monitor globally next year after receiving CE-Mark clearance, and Jeff Pompeo, President & CEO, says the product will help save countless lives around the world.

“VitalStream’s ability to measure blood pressure, vitals and hemodynamics continuously, wirelessly and non-invasively means that it eliminates ‘blind spots’ between intermittent blood pressure cuff readings, where clinicians can’t see their patient’s changing hemodynamic status. By providing continuous beat-by-beat data streaming to our app, secure cloud portal or EMR interfaces, VitalStream detects patient deterioration in real-time and provides immediate alerts so clinicians can take lifesaving interventions earlier. Earlier interventions typically means better patient outcomes.”

While only one piece of the final puzzle Caretaker Medical are highly satisfied with not just the customisable nature of the 4D SYSTEMS touch display, but the level of customer support and ideation throughout the entire process. 4D SYSTEMS loves partnering with medical providers, and we are passionate about continuing to make a difference with our solutions in the real world.

Our diverse product range includes a huge selection of touch displays, no matter what project you are working on. 4D SYSTEMS can help take your product to the next level with enterprise-grade technology solutions, so contact us today or call +61 02 9625 9714.

What’s ahead for 4D SYSTEMS

2023-09-29T23:32:31+10:00Categories: Company News|Tags: |

To our valued stakeholders, as we close out the year, I wanted to take this opportunity to share my reflections on what 2021 meant for us as an organisation and provide a preview of what to expect from us in 2022.

A Uniquely Challenging Year

Like most if not all industries, we’ve had to endure a challenging year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, not only as a manufacturer, but also as an organisation and team facing the same unique challenges. We underwent a few difficult months of lockdown in our part of Sydney, which meant we had to spread more of our team apart and work remotely. Remote working is nothing new for us; we’ve had remote team members since 2009 and so adopting to the new normal was a relatively easy transition for our team.

We’ve always been an agile team, and when disruption occurs, we are quick to react to new challenges that confront us. To be able to get product to customers, there is a lot of effort that goes on in the background that isn’t seen. Production planning, sourcing of hundreds of different components, managing lead times, global transporting and importing from all around the world, being mindful of the emissions that come with a lot of this logistics movement. Most significantly, being carbon-neutral with DHL, we successfully offset carbon emissions for all our import and export transportation. In this sense, we aim to tread as lightly as possible.

An Ambitious Goal

Every company committed to innovation has a Wishlist; we are no different! Earlier this year prior to the COVID-19 lock down, we had, and still have ambitions to introduce and implement a total line solution with a fully automated SMT line, that is IoT connected, with the addition of robots as part of our smart factory setup. This would triple our daily production output but requires a multi-million dollar investment and larger premises as the line itself is 25 metres long.

Here it is in all its glory the total line solution that we are looking to implement.

Yamaha YSP10 printer/Yamaha SPI/ 2 X YSM20R + Feeders + Tray Tower/Yamaha AOI/Yamaha YST15 storage tower + Nutek board handling for full automation along with Laser marker for barcoding product and a N2 Heller oven with 13 zones top and bottom + the Yamaha YFACT/YSUP programming and Factory management SW.

We are committed to making this happen, so that our customers experience an even superior standard of 4D product, with world class machinery and tech, driven by our determination for excellence.

Our Staff: The Driving Force of Our Company

In the coming weeks we will be releasing our refreshed logo, Purpose, Vision, Mission, and Values statements to the world. I wanted to have this articulated for many years and a great deal of collaborative effort went in to putting these together. I am delighted with the result. These statements are a genuine reflection of what we at 4D believe in, and aspire for.

What’s most satisfying is that these statements have been developed organically from the hearts of our team members across manufacturing, marketing, operations, sales, and engineering.

This inspiration comes from the realisation that the products we deliver, and everything our team does  – from the design, development, manufacture and marketing –  for it to be used on a medical ventilator that assists in saving someone’s life. That’s what really inspires us.

Ultimately, we serve many different industries, and whenever we see the successful and beneficial use of our products all over the world, we cannot always find the words to truly state the appreciation we have as a team to support these initiatives.

From what started as an idea in 2005, our organisation grew to be one of the global leaders in the embedded display space, with clients and distribution partners across many different countries. Feels like yesterday of October 2008,  I walked in the doors of the small garage operation of my brother and our company founder Atilla. We were a team of a few people, struggling to make ends meet, working 7 days a week, long into the early hours of the morning to build something he and I strongly believed in. Fast forward to the end of 2021, we are truly honoured and grateful for how far we have come. We’re still actively and directly involved after all these years, doing our best to deliver on the passion, and care, needed to support the true heroes at 4D SYSTEMS who are driving the business forward day in and day out– our team.

The Next Chapter

In 2022, we will be launching some very exciting projects that have had a lot of focus over the last 12 months.

  • Enterprise sub-domain which will focus on smartSOLUTIONS we have been developing for the medical, building and lifestyle segments.
  • Purpose, Vision, Mission and Values statements to be officially released to the world.
  • Organisational ecosystem – Our leadership and business philosophy that is embedded in our organisation.
  • Tree planting day at our headquarters’ office garden, and a commitment to planting 1000 trees a year in local regions.
  • GEN5 – Our newest and most powerful graphics processor and product development expected to be release later in 2022.
  • OLED as well as E-paper displays to play a more prominent role in our 2022 product line up.

We can’t wait to share these all with you.

Warm Regards,

Sinan Aknar

Managing Director

Smart Display Solutions Enhance Lifestyle Choices, Health and Safety

2023-07-27T19:15:07+10:00Categories: UX/UI|Tags: |

Touchscreens form a significant aspect of the way we view and interact with the world. Most of us interact with digital displays and touchscreens multiple times daily.

Banks, fast-food outlets, public transport, shops and many more such services rely on touchscreens for efficient operation, providing us with an easy-to-use and adaptable interface. Similarly, our home appliances and wearables commonly feature touchscreens through which we make health, work and lifestyle choices.

Predictive and Non-Predictive Possibilities

The key word is choice. Digital technology heavily relies on automation, and that is due to predictive nature of most digital function. Predictive functions are best achieved through automation. For example, a sensor in a room can automatically send a signal to the lighting system to “wake up” and light up the room as soon as it detects a human entering the room if the room is dark. That is predictive.

What if, however, the person wants the light to be romantically dimmer? This is a choice that a person can make and is non-predictive. It therefore requires a human input for such a choice. There are many ways humans can interact and input their choices into the digital ecosystem. Touch and voice are the most common methods to input non-predictive human choices.

The most discrete methods still is touch: touchscreens that display an array of choices that one can quietly make without announcing one’s choice to the rest of the people in the room: privacy and choice are still amongst the most important personal liberties we are not easily going to give up any time soon! And this is mainly why OEMs of smart lifestyle products are increasingly purposing their products with smart display solutions utilising sensors, IOT, and of course touch that enhance lifestyle choices.

Human Centred Design by 4D Systems

4D SYSTEMS is committed to enhance lifestyle choices through its smart display solutions. 4D display solutions provide touch responsive options right at your fingertips that places the ability to make non-predictive choices at the centre, in addition to any type of predictive automations that digitally driven products need. From water dispensers and toasters, to smart wearables and smart home solutions, our Gen4 series of smart display modules are amongst one of the many array of display modules, just as our pixxiLCD series where size maters.

We do automations via our display modules extremely well and at the highest standards; but we incorporate Human Centred Design (HCD) with artful creativity that enhances lifestyle choices, helping make human intelligence smarter through our display solutions.

Safety, Health and Maintenance Advantages

Display screens, particularly touchscreens, are a better solution than knobs and buttons in the new normal due to a stark increase in infectious diseases such as COVID-19. Although the risks of infection from surfaces is low, display screens offer clear advantages that promote better health and safety standards.

Here are five key advantages of incorporating display screens into OEM products, e.g., home appliances like water dispensers and toasters and home, and wearables for healthy living and for monitoring purposes:

  1. Display screens are easy to clean and disinfect, as opposed to knobs and buttons. All 4D SYSTEMS’ screens are disinfectant-safe and accept wipeable films to be installed if needed. Early types of machines and appliances with buttons are difficult to clean or disinfect because they provide an uneven surface with small gaps which are not easy to reach, and possibly avoided, during cleaning. Touchscreens, on the other hand, provide a flat and even surface which allows for easy and thorough cleaning in both commercial as well as home settings. Click here for a good resource from Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
  2. Public touchscreens help reduce close contact in times where physical distancing in public spaces is necessary. Touchscreens can greatly reduce , or even eliminate, the need for face-to-face interaction with customers and help everybody maintain reasonable physical distancing recommended by the government. When used in conjunction with effective hygiene control, this can prove a much safer alternative to normal customer interaction for many commercial sectors. Check with our support staff for more information on our screens and safety recommendations.
  3. Display screens reduce repair and maintenance costs, because knobs and buttons either break or malfunction more frequently. Associated with cleaning, common problems that contribute to malfunction of buttons and knobs are dirt and grime as well as regular use. Display screens overcome such problems and offer a better value that allows equipment and appliances to also last longer. Reduced maintenance – both cost and time – as well as longer functional life directly and positively impact ecological sustainability. 4D SYSTEMS is committed to high standards for its products, especially connected to environmentally responsible solutions, and that is why it is an ISO-9001 certified company and undergoing current attainment of both ISO-14001 and ISO-26000 certifications.
  4. Display screens reduce the overall cost of equipment and appliances by allowing human interaction through touch and thereby resolving the problem of having an overwhelming number of mechanical knobs and controls. This is one of the reasons that the car industry is fast adopting touchscreen solutions over mechanical controls. According to the market research firm, IHS Markit for example, approximately 98% of all cars to be sold in USA already had touchscreens as of last year. And that is just the car industry, in USA alone! Similar trends are seen in home appliances and other lifestyle products.
  5. Display screens combine all of the above in stylishly aesthetic manner, and 4D display solutions help engineers of equipment and appliances turn technology into art. Human Centred Design is a cornerstone of 4D SYSTEMS’ philosophy for Excellence, and design aesthetics is something we place a strong emphasis on alongside our commitment to high quality display solutions that can help make human intelligence smarter.

4D SYSTEMS is a crucial bridge between digital automation and choices that humans make and enjoy through tis smart display solutions that is incorporated into smart lifestyle products within commercial applications and as easily in home appliances and personal wearable applications.

Contact 4D SYSTEMS enterprise solutions team who will help you turn your technology into art that enhances lifestyle choices, health and safety.

The team is currently preparing a vehicle to participate in ESVC3000Asia’s biggest Electric Solar Vehicle Championship. The race will cover approximately 1,600km, from Delhi to Pune, with the vehicles racing on a single charge. However, Team Solarium’s ultimate goal is to represent India on the world stage.

“Our future ambition is to participate in the world’s toughest solar race competition, the World Solar Challenge that takes place in Australia,” says Aditya from Team Solarium. “It is a 3,000km solar car race from Darwin to Adelaide and solar car teams are expected to complete it on a single charge.”

Solution

4D SYSTEMS has a long history of providing resources for solar vehicle projects. In a similar scenario, engineering students from a Portugal university chose 4D SYSTEMS to provide a cockpit display for their solar-powered boat.

So it’s no surprise that Team Solarium also identified 4D SYSTEMS as the ideal provider for their vehicle’s display unit. The team needed their display to have a number of key features:

  • Low power and lightweight display with capacitive touch.
  • Smart and user-friendly interface that allowed for easy interaction from the driver.
  • Sufficient GPIO pins for easy programming in the Workshop4 IDE software.
  • Easy integration with the vehicle’s CAN bus.

Their chosen unit – 4D SYSTEMS SK-GEN4-43DCT-CLB – delivers on all of these features and more.

“The display will be incorporated on the vehicle dashboard from where the driver will monitor the important vehicle parameters. The dashboard will be present behind the steering wheel and in sight of the driver for easy access. It will be integrated into the vehicle during our manufacturing process.”

Outcome

Team Solarium will debut their solar vehicle in the 2022 rally, but they also have plans to participate in other events locally and abroad.

“We are currently in the design phase of the season and will know the final outcome of our project after the competition is held in March 2022. The vehicle will serve as a single-seater adventure-class solar electric vehicle, and since this a student-run project we won’t commercialise our product. But we will take part in various other national and international events such as ICERP, KPIT Sparkle, and Auto Expo where we will display our vehicle and our sponsors.”

Team Solarium found 4D SYSTEMS extremely helpful in directing them to the right product for their specific needs. There are also “abundant resources and material available on the website, which helped us understand and work with the product easily. We have had a great experience with the company so far,” says Aditya.

Whether it’s a hobby project of your own or you need support with a large-scale solar-powered vehicle, 4D SYSTEMS has the solutions to meet your needs.

Historic Hotel in Fort Worth Texas Digitally Transformed with Smart Display Solutions from Australia

‘The Sinclair’ Hotel undergoes a stunning digital transformation and retrofitting of their Building Automation System.

In Fort Worth Texas, stands an early 1900s building.

The original elevator doors and cigar boxes might fool one to think they have travelled back in time. It is anything but: from check-in to accessing your room, the hotel is futuristic and all digital.

At The Sinclair – and Autograph Collection of hotels – the guest can adjust the temperature of the room, the light settings in the suite’s bedroom and bathroom, the window shades, and even the shower temperature to the exact degree that they choose.

Image: The Sinclair In-Room control interface, created using 4D SYSTEMS’ 4Discovery-50.

Companies like Intel, Cisco, NuLEDs and Igor-Tech have their data and Internet of Things technology weaving everywhere behind the walls of the entire hotel, quietly and seamlessly, helping share and utilise data that drives the digital technology of the world-first all-digital hotel.

The vision of Sinclair hotels to turn a historic building into an upscale hotel of the future came alive as result.

But The Sinclair did not overlook the very humans who would come to enjoy their signature hotel space.

Whilst innovation through data drives the hotels digital infrastructure, it is the way humans interact with that data and choose to create the micro-environment most suited to them during their stay is what brings the hotel to life.

And this bridge – between data and the micro-environment- is 4D SYSTEMS display solutions, right at the fingertips of every guest in the same elegant aesthetics as the hotel itself boasts.

4D SYSTEMS customised its intelligent display module to suit The Sinclair’s specifications, as well as to the project’s partners like Intel, Cisco and Igor-Tech.

At the centre of the guest’s attention is the custom-designed 4Discovery smart display system from 4D Systems, whilst the sophisticated IoT, PoE (power over ethernet) and the entire automated digital infrastructure quietly and invisibly operates efficiently behind the scenes, contributing to immense energy savings for The Sinclair, thus creating a more sustainable and energy-efficient building.
